Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content

Hmm… what to say about this one?

Well, first off, there isn’t much that you would consider “concerning”, which is a positive considering what we usually find in graphic novels today.

So why do we hesitate a bit? While not concerning in the traditional sense, many parents will want to know that this book is out at the extreme when it comes to the nonsense factor. It is start to end complete and total nonsense, maybe the most we have ever encountered. Some parents may not care because they are just trying to make sure it is safe. Others try and keep their home clear of this type of thing.

Here are the handful of items we did take down to share for this one:

  • The illustrations are certainly odd. This is intended to be funny, but there are a few times when some will find them a bit too weird.
  • One drawing has them in the belly of a large beast. Two creepy skeletons are their. Surprisingly one of them starts talking (again, meant to be silly).
  • There is a reference to “millions of years”.
  • Someone utters, “as luck would have it”.
  • The “good guys” celebrate the defeat of a villain, saying “The beast is dead! The beast is dead! The Pea-nut Butter Beast is dead!”
Our Thoughts

The attempt at lighter, silly humor starts before you get off the table of contents. The main factor here for Christian parents will almost assuredly be how they feel about nonsense for the sake of nonsense type content like this. We have this one as Recommended due to it being “safe”, but that is certainly something to decide for your young reader.

Come along with New York Times-bestselling author Andy Griffiths (The 13-Story Treehouse) on a brand-new adventure that plunks the reader right into the middle of all the wacky action and laughs with peanut butter monsters and its unique storytelling style—perfect for fans of Dog Man and InvestiGators! Hey, you—yes, you! Remember when we found that really deep hole and you jumped in and I had to jump in to rescue you and at the bottom of the hole we found the cave of the legendary Peanut Butter Beast? That was one of our deepest—and most dangerous—adventures ever! What? You don’t remember? Well, have I got a story for you! Let me remind you how it all went down … and down … and down … and down …

Scripture Reflection

Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

— Colossians 3:16-17
