Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content

Important Note: We will point out that many will consider the family this book introduces as “extremely conservative”. That may fall into the “concern” category for some Christian families. Please make sure to read the Our Thoughts for our take on this. There is very little to worry about here. There are a couple of slightly perilous situations some very young readers may be concerned by. Early in the book there is a small fire at a neighbor’s house. Later the family’s grandmother has a heart attack.

Our Thoughts

It is not often we can honestly say we were challenged reading through and reviewing a children’s book. This book and the rest of the series it belongs to is an exception to that. This is a wonderful book and series. We will just provide a high-level view of what you will see in this short book. There is a huge emphasis on morning devotion (mom, dad, kids of all ages). There is a lot of really solid content around evangelism (a close family member is saved during the book!) and prayer, especially as a family. There is also very practical family interaction, things like mom and daughter making homemade bread. Homeschooling is held in a very positive light. Even small things like how the book points out that dad always gives mom a kiss when he arrives home. Some will find the “conservative” approach to family depicted in this series as over the top. We disagree. In this world and its constant pull away from anything and everything that has to do with our faith, most if not all of us could certainly use more “conservative” inputs. In fact, if you are worried about this, ask yourself what part of the previous paragraph you don’t want to see more of in your household. Consider grabbing this series and reading through it with your kiddos. This particular title in the series can be an addition to a Christmas library as it falls during that wonderful season (we see homemade gifts for mom and between siblings, caroling, treats for neighbors that share Jesus’ love, Christmas hymns… plus discussion around being intentional with decorations). One we HIGHLY recommend to Christian families. Note: There are additional books around the Christmas season with the Moody family. We link to the full list of books below so check those out as well as options for your Christmas library.

Plot SummaryNote: This information is typically from the publisher.

Winter with the Moodys, Book 3 in the Moody Family Series, begins with midnight excitement. Then, early in December, Miss Carolyn, the midwife, comes to the house to check on Mom and her baby. Throughout the book, friendly but slightly eccentric Mr. Delome pops over for a few unexpected visits. As Christmas approaches, the Moodys are busy preparing to bless others. Readers may remember Mrs. Bagwell from the two previous books. She invites Mrs. Moody and the children over to visit her one afternoon. Grandpa’s life transformation is woven throughout the story. The heart-stopping conclusion contains a surprise ending that will thrill and delight you. Come join the Moodys for the winter! Flip through the book above to read more! Sarah Maxwell's passion is to see young people with books that would edify and build them up in the Lord Jesus and in family relationships. She has enjoyed writing for over ten years filling each book of the Moody Family series with inspiring content that sends children excitedly reaching for the next book. Sarah loves to meet Moody fans as she travels the country with her family. Sarah also helps with the Titus2.com ministry. Her desire is to serve Jesus with her time through speaking and writing to encourage others. Reading comprehension level: ages 7-12 Read aloud comprehension level: ages 4 and up The book is also illustrated with one drawing per chapter.

Scripture Reflection

Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'

— 1 Peter 1:13-16
