Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content

There are a couple of heavier topics parents should know about when deciding for their child. Before the start of the book, the main character's mother died in a car wreck. This is revisited in a bit of a flashback. This event then led to her and her father no longer having more than a superficial relationship and communication. In fact, Dad is basically absent (later we find it is due to the hurt from his loss). We also find she feels a similar estrangement from God ('how could He forgive me') as she blames herself. They have moved frequently and it has taken a toll. If your child can handle this, then they are in store for a story rooted in Christian themes. If you do read this one there are a couple of items worth discussing. Winnie comes close to idolizing this horse. There are quotes and points where it goes beyond where we should ever allow our desire for anything besides God to take us. While not dealt with in the book this can lead to a solid discussion topic.

Our Thoughts

One of the best things about this story are the Characters. There are several Christians like Winnie's sister, friends and even how her mom is described that are a wonderful witness. The story also revolves around forgiveness - forgiving yourself and accepting God's forgiveness He offers freely as well as reconciliation. They are a close family of faith, scripture appears, we hear multiple prayers and even a singing of Amazing Grace. A couple more notes: There is a new version of this series for younger readers called Winne the Early Years by this same author for kiddos that may have trouble following this story. Also, there are helpful resources at the back of the book, such as a glossary of horse terms used in the book.

Plot SummaryNote: This information is typically from the publisher.

Twelve-year-old Winnie Willis has a way with horses. She can gentle the wildest mare, but other parts of life don't always come as easily. Along with her dad and sister Lizzy, Winnie is learning how to live without her mom--who was also a natural horse gentler. As Winnie teachers her horses about unconditional love and blind trust, God shows Winnie that He can be trusted as well. Readers will be hooked by the series' vivid cast of characters whose quirky personalities fill Winnie's life with friendship and adventure.

Scripture Reflection

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God— even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved. Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.

— 1 Corinthians 10:31-11:1
