Wings of Fire: The Dragonet Prophecy
VERDICT: Avoid

Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content
The incredibly important, extremely concerning thing about this book is what happens later in the series. This is one of those books that, over time, adds more and more and more characters and relationships that do not line up with what the Bible tells us is God’s design for relationships/marriage and gender. A handful of books in, we start to see glimpses of this. In later books and series this comes to the surface more and more. If you are interested there are plenty of threads and discussion pages talking through all of the various characters and their sexual identity and/or gender identity (some with terms you likely won’t even recognize). Also, while we feel like the above point is certainly enough to avoid the series entirely, we do want to point out another important potential concern here. There are quite a few violent moments that are best described as pretty graphic. These moments are relatively frequent and probably more graphic than you might expect from the rest of the text. Dragon is stabbed through the skull with a poisonous tail and the body is thrown over a cliff, they find a scavenger (their word for human) and rip its head off, constant talk of war/fighting/killing, ripping heads off in one bite, a dragon bites the head off of a human and it mentions blood pooling on the floor, a dragon takes its own life in a fight to end pain, talk of a dragon eating other babies on hatching day, poison causing a face to start disintegrating, an older dragon who can’t fly is taken to a high height an dropped (mentions hearing the bones crack), snapping a dragon’s neck in one clean break, a person is eaten, corpses/blood/bones/slicing through a neck/body parts seared off/murdered/stabbed in the heart. A few other things to know about. There is a set of dragons who can read minds and tell the future. Some talk of magic, enchantment, etc. When asking about his father his mother laughs and says that they have breeding night once a month and then everyone just goes back to their homes.

Our Thoughts
This is one we are really bummed about. It is such an interesting and engaging storyline, with a lot of focus on friendship and loyalty. But while we as Christian parents are called to educate our children, when they are ready, about the sinfulness of this world… introducing them to emotionally charged stories that wave beloved characters in front of them that turn out to be gay, bi, pan(?), and who knows what else is certainly not what God wants for our families. The fact that this starts several books in when a young reader is hooked into the storyline and characters makes it that much more dangerous from a Christian perspective. Because of that, unfortunately, this is one to Avoid.

A thrilling new series soars above the competition and redefines middle-grade fantasy fiction for a new generation! The seven dragon tribes have been at war for generations, locked in an endless battle over an ancient, lost treasure. A secret movement called the Talons of Peace is determined to bring an end to the fighting, with the help of a prophecy -- a foretelling that calls for great sacrifice. Five dragonets are collected to fulfill the prophecy, raised in a hidden cave and enlisted, against their will, to end the terrible war. But not every dragonet wants a destiny. And when the select five escape their underground captors to look for their original homes, what has been unleashed on the dragon world may be far more than the revolutionary planners intended . . .

Wow, we are so thankful to see this. Parents stepped up and pointed out some of the major concerns here and rescued this article (unfortunately the next review was not rescued from this). We are glad a note was added to point people to those comments.
As some of the parent comments mention, we really do wish this site had gone and done more to warn parents.
Read ReviewThis is something we want to really watch out for and avoid ourselves as we move forward… to avoid posting a positive review on a book that then later goes off the rails down the road in future books. This review doesn’t include any of the incredibly concerning content that comes later in the series, leaving parents unaware. Unfortunate they didn’t go back and update.
Read ReviewDon't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you. Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.
