Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content
While this book is meant to be “over-the-top” and a bit lighter in its approach, this is still a set of unfortunate content that should be considered. A married couple, characters you instantly don’t care for are constantly bickering and arguing. They are setup to represent the worldly disgruntled married couple. To add to this the narrator mentions that, “when a married couple argues it can go on for hours or days.” Their son is even worse and often shoots at birds with a slingshot. The main character is dishonest on a few occasions. Again, the narrator makes this worse by describing him as being like “the gunk at the bottom of the trash can”. In another over-the-top moment there are two child characters who work together to drive a taxi around town for their father (one steering, one on pedals). There are some pessimistic views peppered in the book, such as “parents don’t tell their children anything’ and vice versa. There is a brief mention of a statue of a woman made of plaster that is described as having no clothes on, but nothing further is described. Adults are often clueless. There is one potentially frightening scene where a woman is saved from drowning (caused by the villain).

Our Thoughts
This is a mystery that is interesting, engaging that readers of this author will recognize right away. The same goes for the style of humor seen throughout. It hooks you in from page 1 as you try to figure out what is going on and how it will end. Many readers will find it very interesting and enjoyable. It only feels intense or perilous at one key point of rescue. It should be mentioned that this book feels similar in some ways to the recently reviewed first entry from the “Series of Unfortunate Events” books by this same writer. The main character is a young teen boy who is a sleuth, a fun setup for certain readers. This is one to carefully consider, especially the set of concerning content above, and decide for yourself if it is right for your middle and early high school grade reader.
Plot SummaryNote: This information is typically from the publisher.Use with caution
Before the Baudelaires became orphans, before he encountered A Series of Unfortunate Events, even before the invention of Netflix, Lemony Snicket was a boy discovering the mysteries of the world. In a fading town, far from anyone he knew or trusted, a young Lemony Snicket began his apprenticeship in an organization nobody knows about. He started by asking questions that shouldn't have been on his mind. Now he has written an account that should not be published, in four volumes that shouldn't be read. This is the first volume.

Plugged In often 'buries the lead' when it comes to concerning content. Here there is very little review content.
