Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content
There is not much to list here for potentially concerning content in this short graphic novel. The main thing to be aware of is that Iris, one of the two main characters, shows some unfortunate behavior a couple of times, especially at the start of the story. She gets angry at her mom on a call, eventually slamming the phone and hanging up on her. She then chooses to leave the house without permission at night while mom is away. When her friend Sam asks her about potentially moving away, saying “what about our parents?” she responds, “What about them?”. A couple of times she is rude and self-centered, occasionally even justifying her behavior. We never felt this was shown as clearly wrong to the young reader. The young lady Iris meets a character that the story seems to indicate has passed away a long time ago. She appears in the story normal, but the author appears to be indicating Iris is seeing into the past. These friends sneak out at night, “borrow” tools from other people’s yards and go out to a remote area (cast in a pretty positive light). Luck is mentioned. “What the…” is uttered. When asked why a child is breaking a clear rule the response comes back, “because she can”.

Our Thoughts
This short work has beautiful illustrations and is mostly clean. The children that the story focuses on, especially the young lady Iris, leave something to be desired from a likability standpoint, but later an older man comes along and is very nice to the kids. While not ideal, this is an ok option to consider if your child enjoys reading graphic novels as there are few and far between clean options out there.

Grand adventures stories often begin where you least expect them… Iris knows this because she’s read them all. However, as a thirteen-year-old stuck in the tiny town of Bugden, real adventure seems like a distant dream. But when Iris and her best friend, Sam, stumble upon an unusually dry river on the outskirts of town, they’re led to a discovery beyond anything Iris has ever read about: a hidden city and a forgotten tale of friendship. In Jason Pamment's middle grade graphic novel debut, perfect for fans of Hilda and This Was Our Pact, can Iris and Sam uncover the truth in time to keep their own friendship afloat, or will history repeat itself and pull them apart forever?
