Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content
There is a bit of minor concern to note here. One scene of the book includes a Halloween party. Several of the traditional decorations and costumes are mentioned (werewolf, witches, skeleton, 'a devil'. There are a couple of more 'serious' moments in the book. Each are quickly resolved in a great way (by Humphrey's help), but when first presented they are quite a bit deeper than the rest of the material. In one a young man starts light bullying behavior (trips someone, shoots rubber bands, makes a mean comment to Humphrey and tries to free him maliciously, lies when confronted). This is out of character and we quickly find out something is really bothering the child to lead to the behavior. Later it is revealed that another character who is very unkind had been through a traumatic incident that they have not gotten over.

Our Thoughts
This is a great story for children. Besides the two moments mentioned above the book remains light and fun. Humphrey is innocent and kind. Most of the book is around his helping a different character each chapter. ENJOY!

The first book in the series about everyone's favorite classroom pet! You can learn a lot about life by observing another species. That’s what Humphrey was told when he was first brought to Room 26. And boy, is it true! In addition to having FUN-FUN-FUN in class, each weekend this amazing hamster gets to sleep over with a different student, like Lower-Your-Voice-A.J. and Speak-Up-Sayeh. Soon Humphrey learns to read, write, and even shoot rubber bands (only in self-defense, of course). With lots of friends to help, adventures to enjoy, and a cage with a lock-that-doesn’t- lock, Humphrey's life is almost perfect. If only the teacher, Mrs. Brisbane, wasn’t out to get him! Boys and girls can't help falling in love with Humphrey!

Plugged In often 'buries the lead' when it comes to concerning content. That is not so much the case here, but we do find it a bit ironic that kids wearing santa hats is listed under the 'Christian Beliefs' section.
Read ReviewWhile sometimes helpful, always be cautious of putting too much weight on 'parent' reviews, especially from a secular site.
