The biggest concern for the book is the hunting and processing of animals. This is true even of animals that are not normally hunted (turtle, monkey, flamingo, penguin, etc.). There are some animals that are hunted that are now endangered. Some sensitive audiences may be upset by this. Some of these are examples are potentially more upsetting than others, as for example when the book describes somewhat graphically a dog getting ahold of an animal or an animal being decapitated. On the positive side, the father always encourages his sons not to kill for fun, but rather for sustenance. There are outdated terms like 'savages' used throughout the book, but the tone is not derogatory rather a classification of societal development. This book is also set in a timeframe where children are given alcohol in small amounts on a somewhat frequent basis. This is seen in many books of this era, but if not dealt with it could send an unintentional message to a child today. Again on a positive note, the father does make a strong point to teach of moderation, especially in this area. This should be discussed with all children who read the book. There are a lot of different versions out there so be careful to pick the 'right' one as some classics are now being 'modified' in ways that would concern Christian parents. Our Thoughts
This a great adventure book for the whole family that is hard to put down. We would be cautious of this book if there are avid animal lovers in the house who may be disturbed by the content described above. Otherwise, the positive content is well worth the time invested. The family prays together very frequently in deep and meaningful ways. They rest on the Sabbath, encourage each other in godly ways and the father is quick to point out the shortcomings of his sons and redirect them towards godly character. Dad and Mom both do not miss any opportunity for a teaching moment. The relationship of Dad and Mom are beautiful and contract sharply with how marriages are often shown today. If your reader won't be too disturbed by the animal-related concern content and can tackle reading this (or having it read to them) it is a great story with faith infused throughout. Their resourcefulness and the outdoor adventure feel are really enjoyable.

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
