Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content

There is almost nothing to be concerned about here, but as we always do with books of this type, we do want to say that how you feel about this title will probably come down to whether you are comfortable with authors weaving in fictional elements or filling in gaps as best they can when sharing the scriptures with kids. We will say that this series is probably the most intentional of not using much gap filling at all, but at the end of the day kids will read about talking animals and such as they observe these events. While we always make it a point to share this, in this case it is very much diminished when wisely at the end young readers will see the following, “In the stories, while the talking animals did not exist, the events depicted are real. To discover the truth behind the tales, read through the bible passages and answer the questions. You’ll be amazed to see how much of each story is taken directly from the Bible”. We will also mention that early in the book we see the serpent in the garden and this could be a bit frightening for the youngest and most sensitive of readers. This theme runs throughout as the author attempts to be very intentional in seeing evil running throughout the biblical story (a great reminder that evil is always lurking, but God has the final say and the final victory!). For example, a wicked viper strikes a rat and swallows it whole. There are also parts of the biblical account that are covered that some parents may be waiting on a certain level of maturity to cover that are included here (e.g., God’s call to sacrifice Issac, eventually pointing to Jesus’ substitutionary death, which we must mention is handled and explained beautifully).

Our Thoughts

This is the first book in a series the publisher describes as being aimed at “retelling Bible narratives from the perspective of the animals who could have witnessed the events firsthand”. For those of you who checked out the “The Amazing Tales of Max & Liz” series by Jenny L. Cote that we previously reviewed, you will have a bit of a jump on picturing what this series is like (but Redemption Tale books are both shorter and cover a larger part of the biblical narrative in each title, both have great and different aspects to them and very much worth reading). Like that series, this is a really neat option for kids to explore the scripture in a way that really gets their imagination going. It starts with an excellent introduction, laying out an overview of the series, focusing on God’s work in creation. The book then opens with Psalm 148:7-10 and includes a scriptural reference at the end of each chapter that follows. We soon jump to “the Fall” and this book does such a great job of sharing some of the incredibly vast impacts that event had on God’s good creation. In fact, readers continue on through things like the Tower of Babel and the Exodus. Along the way we see wisdom sprinkled in, e.g., “Complaining closes your eyes to the blessings around you”. Overall it is very neat how the story is woven together in pieces through the animals in various ways. By taking a bit of a longer view of creation, the fall and events that follow, the author is able to really show more of the arc of the biblical storyline. This is enhanced by the beautiful intentionality of the book to point the reader back again and again to God’s plan of eventual redemption through Christ (hence, Redemption Tales). Finally, we will end by saying this is a great candidate to read together or even as a potential addition to a homeschool Bible curriculum. It will bring up so many teaching moments that point to the heart of God. It also reinforces the learning with a set of questions at the end. This is one we HIGHLY Recommend.

Plot SummaryNote: This information is typically from the publisher.

Take a front row seat along with the animals who watch as a terrible shadow mars God’s perfect –world―yet redemption is not far behind! While two newly created rock badgers explore their growing world, they encounter a dark foe—the great dragon, the serpent of old. The sinister creature interrupts the badgers’ joyful exploration of the growing landscape to reveal his wicked plan to destroy God’s creation. When the enemy takes flight, the badgers race to warn Adam and Eve of the impending danger. With every thunderous flap of wings, the serpent draws closer to his perch in the forbidden tree. Will the badgers make it in time to expose the evil plan. The Shadow and the Promise by bestselling author Marty Machowski follows the adventures of the animals who witness the events of Genesis and Exodus unfold before them. Join badgers in the Garden of Eden, an array of animals in the Ark, groundhogs at Babel, Abraham’s donkey, sheep from Joseph’s herd, the cats in the palace in Egypt, and a dog and oxen present at the Passover.

Scripture Reflection

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

— 2 Timothy 3:14-17
