Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content

The main concerning item to know about comes in the attitudes of some of the children at the start of this series. We believe this is to make room for growth throughout, but it is unfortunate at first. The biggest example of this comes in the relationship between two siblings. Xavier and Evan have a bad relationship. They are rude, call names, fight, tease. Evan is not very kind and is immoral. For example, he hides his book when reading at night and, to make it worse, mom comes in and shows that she knew all along, but didn’t discipline the sneakiness. He also wears shoes out of the house he knows he isn’t supposed to. You see character growth across the board over the course of this first title, but not everything is shown as clearly wrong, which we would have liked in a Christian title. — There is a discussion about zombies and two characters debate whether or not they are real. The word idiot is also used.

Our Thoughts

Man, what a great book. This initial story in this multi-book series really does a fantastic job of helping kids think through what the Christian journey looks like. While we wish it had done more to better model how Christian relationships between siblings should look, the rest of the book will be a faith-building journey (see our review of the first book in the Baxter Family books to see a series that does a fantastic job at this). Christians will see so much familiar faith-centric content. There are references to verses, spiritual armor, the real nature and danger of evil and so much more. After the children experience growth in the spiritual realm, they actually get the chance to go back and handle a moment from their daily lives, now in a Kingdom focused way. The result is both incredibly powerful and practical. To be intentional about maximizing the spiritual impact on your child, we would highly recommend that each parent has an initial conversation before their child begins reading to prep them to look for the symbolism and parallels to our quest to find and follow the narrow path. Encourage them to come to you throughout the read and share around this topic. Even better, make this a series to read together. There is enough here that you may find yourself challenged as well. For those who end up loving the series, there is also a children’s daily devotional book.

Plot SummaryNote: This information is typically from the publisher.

The battle is real. As brothers, Xavier and Evan are used to battling each other. But now they’re discovering that there is a much bigger battle going on all around them. And it’s their turn to fight. Based on Ephesians 6:10–18, The Prince Warriors is the first book in Priscilla Shirer’s epic new children’s series that brings to life the invisible struggle ensuing in the spiritual realm. Xavier, Evan, and their friends have typical lives until they enter a mysterious land called Ahoratos. There they meet their guide, Ruwach, who offers wisdom and direction as the kids’ initial adventure begins—an adventure filled with armor and danger and a very real enemy.

Our Thoughts on this Review

This is an interesting one. It is a secular view of a book that is Christian allegory at its core.

Scripture Reflection

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

— 2 Timothy 3:14-17
