This is a mostly clean title. The most concerning aspect you will want to address with your younger reader is a recurring plot aspect where we are told that the origin of Earth is credited to the action of an ancient dragon (and not our loving Creator) in a very matter of fact way. At one point this is called the “true story of how life began”.
The other things we saw:
- Orphaned Lunar is pretty jaded early on in the story. At one point he declares that “Praying for a rich doner to come sweep us away is a waste of breath”. Very early on he is often rude.
- Lunar refers to death in a very secular way as “slipping into the great unknown”
- There is some intensity here. Mars, where the book starts, is a very dangerous place and we often here of potentially getting “rusted” (aka killed). Lunar recalls a time when he was stabbed (not graphic).
- A group of kids who are seen as leaders sneak out often to look at the stars. There is some question of if the lead adult may actually know and be ok with it.
- In a tragic situation some kids are said to have “muttered cuss words”
- After amazing circumstances we read, “If that’s not fate, I don’t know what is”.
- A dragon refers to a group of teens as “gremlins”
- “Delightfully wicked sense of humor” is used as if it is a good thing
- In a super angry moment a dragon has a rush of anger and says, “I will tear them apart. Rip them limb from limb. I will grind their bones into dust” (shown to be out of character).
- Something happens and a character says it is “like something out of a horror movie”.
