Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content

There are a couple of intense, perilous scenes that may be too intense for some readers. This is especially important to know because the artwork (e.g., the cover art) may lead some parents and children to not expect this. That being said, this content is significantly lower than other similar books many Christian parents may be familiar with. The first happens just a few short chapters in so you can read ahead and see if this is right for your younger kiddos before getting started. One character struggles with right and wrong throughout the book. This will actually be something that many children (and even adults) can relate to and it comes out right in the end. There is one comment in the book that says, “you are what you do”, which is not a healthy view of work from a Christian perspective.

Our Thoughts

This is a really entertaining story that will be a great early treat for families that love The Chronicles of Narnia, Lord of the Rings and the more recent Wingfeather Saga and look forward to sharing these stories with their children (who are maybe not quite ready for those heavier stories, because of the length, intensity, etc.). Like a lot of this type of “Christian Allegory”, it feels like if you squint just right you will see the Christ foundation it was built on. There is a good, beloved prince who is betrayed, a community who waits for a future land to come. There is not a ton of direct Christian references like most of the books that get our “Christian Resource” tag, but the father does pray over his children. While the author's website does not have nearly as much reference to his faith as you we would hope to see for someone who God has blessed with success in their career endeavors, but if you search enough, you do find a reference to his Christian faith. On a better note, he recently sent out resources he recommended and nearly every one was gospel focused, which is fantastic. One more note on the artwork. It feels like the artwork feels like it is aimed at younger kids, which may cause older kids to miss out on a story they would love. On the flip side, the artwork may cause some to begin reading it to children who are maybe a bit young for the intensity. Consider reading a few chapter (they are short) to determine if your kiddos will enjoy. Overall, a really interesting story that is very enjoyable.

Plot SummaryNote: This information is typically from the publisher.

Heather and Picket are extraordinary rabbits with ordinary lives until calamitous events overtake them, spilling them into a cauldron of misadventures. They discover that their own story is bound up in the tumult threatening to overwhelm the wider world. Kings fall and kingdoms totter. Tyrants ascend and terrors threaten. Betrayal beckons, and loyalty is a broken road with peril around every bend. Where will Heather and Picket land? How will they make their stand?

Warnings

This review feels like it misses the heart of the book. Also, it feels like it overstates the 'violence'. What is written is accurate, but the feel upon reading it is heavier than it comes across in the book. Again, reading the first few chapters will get to the first perilous scene so you can judge for yourself the intensity level for your child

Scripture Reflection

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.

— Ephesians 5:8-11
