Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content

The biggest thing to know here is that the main character (tell me if you have heard this one before), in the name of trying to be funny, comes across as rude at times. He says things like “Make it snappy!” and “What do you want?”. He also gets frustrated and angry very easily. Another thing to be aware of is that this main character mouse puts on fake wings, a tutu and a crown. This is to take the place of Fairy Godmother in the original story, but obviously a male character, even a mouse, dressing as a woman is not good. The art is neat, but it definitely crosses over into the weird / odd category at times, which is unfortunate. A character utters, “Holy cannoli”. Finally, we will just say that this trying to be funny, modern approach definitely loses the “goodness” that we typically see in the Disney and other related takes on fairy tales. For example, in a modern spin we see that the prince is self-centered and not a nice guy. Cinderella surprisingly responds by being very rude to and about him. She says things like, “He’s awful” calls him “bozo” and more. This is especially strange because besides talking about himself too much he really doesn’t due much to trigger this. It’s odd.

Our Thoughts

There always seems to be room for one more “spin on a fairy tale” story. There are so, so many and yet many of us can’t stay away. Well, this is one you may want to do just that. It is at least worth considering if it would be better to find a better option. We should point out that another very common theme is putting a “modern” polish on stories. Here we see a not-great prince being shunned by a strong-willed and honestly rude princess. But, she doesn’t want to follow that old princess path. She wants to… open a diner. And honestly, the diner thing would be a neat and surprising twist… but we aren’t sure why the sweet and kind to everyone princess thing had to go with it. We have this one as a Prayerfully Consider.

Scripture Reflection

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

— Hebrews 12:1-2
