Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content

While there is little in the way of concerning content, Christian parents do need to make sure their child is ready for the more intense part of this book. While light for a book in this genre, there are a few things to know about. By far the most important to consider revolves around the doctor in this story. He is actually a friend of the main character and likes the young boy, but he is drawn of course by what feels like pure evil. This starts when he discovers a liquid substance extracted from a dragon specimen and, upon trying it, he becomes completely addicted to it. Its addictive effects are described in ways similar to those of real drugs from our world. After some time on this drug-like substance he starts to believe he is hearing from “the dragon”, and feels led to follow its commands. These include a command that the boy must die, in order to save the rest of humanity. This can obviously be heavy for young readers. The doctor secretly poisons the main character and the doctor ends up injected with a poison himself. The dragons are described as deadly and one character says its sharp body could “cut him to shreds”. The bully calls several rude names, including “puke”, “jerk” and “stupid”.

Our Thoughts

This is an exciting fantasy series from an author that many Christian parents will recognize (Ted Dekker) and his daughter (Rachelle). One nice thing about this series is that the Christian references and themes are pretty direct and woven in nicely. The main character and his mother are awesome characters with a beautiful relationship. The mother holds on to the teachings of “Yeshua” (Jesus’ name in Hebrew) which are now outlawed after “religious wars”. She reads them from her ancient book. She teaches them to her son and encourages him with them every chance she gets. For example, “The words of her master, Yeshua, gave her great strength and a peace that passed understanding. They were the bedrock on which she stood, a foundation that could not be shaken as long as she abided in the truth.” and “you might be my son in this life, but you don’t really belong to me. You are a gift from heaven and to heaven you belong. I know Yeshua will be with you always. So what is there to fear? Her son has grown to make these points his own. These references include being the light of the world, being seeped in the lessons of the great teacher Yeshua, returning kindness when bullied, being guided by the Spirit of the Master you follow, Yeshua’s Spirit being in you, forgiving without reason, loving an enemy, narrow path and prayer. There is also a great best friend who is loyal and kind. This series is light enough that people who are hesitant about “sci-fi” won’t have to worry, while retaining all of the excitement and interesting aspects that come from settings just different enough from our world to really capture our attention. Have the sequels ready because this ends on a significant cliffhanger!

Plot SummaryNote: This information is typically from the publisher.

It is said a child will lead them. But lead them where? Jack is just 12, born on an Ark orbiting Earth among 169 survivors of a global apocalypse who eagerly await the planet's restoration so they can return to the surface. With supplies dangerously low, the time for waiting is over. Humanity must return now or die among the stars. Unfortunately there is a problem. A big one. Dragons have inexplicably risen from Earth's ashes. Worse, they emit a global toxin deadly to all over the age of puberty. After much debate, the Ark's leaders realize that humanity's only hope is to send teams of specially trained children to hunt and eliminate the dragon queen. But Jack is frail and deemed unworthy for the dangerous mission. So begins a tale leads readers, young and old alike, on a journey with Jack, the child who will lead them all in the most unlikely of ways. A journey to an Earth they could not have imagined. An Earth where humanity's fear takes physical form as dragons that can only be defeated through a love that casts out all fear.

Scripture Reflection

The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb. By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward.

— Psalm 19:7-11
