Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content

This is a clean graphic novel with very little to worry about. Probably the top of the list is the general “Robin Hood” suggestion that you likely want to use examples like he and his heroic band of men stealing to help those in need (and others, such as Aladdin stealing so he doesn’t starve) to talk through trickier moral situations with your children. The nuance here is that in one sense Robin Hood is “stealing back” money that shouldn’t have been taken from villains… but in another sense he is simply “stealing from the rich” and “he only takes from those who can afford it” and effectively taking the law into his own hands. Should bring up some solid discussions and pointing to the fact that ultimately God is the judge of right and wrong.

Other items to consider:

A man is killed by a sword. The action is not really shown, but he is portrayed laying still on the ground after.

Robin Hood and Maid Marian embrace and kiss at a time when they are not yet married.

There is a threat of hanging from a noose

Friar is shown guiding a man to get really drunk as a part of a “good guy” plan

Young readers will see the line, “You still receive your silver arrow straight through the heart”

We should also just remind parents that short graphic novel adaptations certainly do take away from the real depth of any classic story they portray. Something to keep in mind.

Our Thoughts

As we justifiably grow more and more concerned with the content in graphic novels, we continue to be diligent in finding better alternatives. We were fortunately successful here. This short graphic novel with absolutely beautiful pictures is a safe option for readers who enjoy this format. While Robin Hood’s story always brings up questions (see above), on the nice side we see honor, the fight for justice and helping those who can’t help themselves. In this version we even hear Robin Hood comment, “What we need is someone to care for our souls”, referring to Friar Tuck. With this version coming from Usborne, it even includes a bit of educational follow-on you can lead your kids to (in the form of a QR link). This is one we Recommend.

Scripture Reflection

Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.

— Matthew 7:13-14
