Our Thoughts

Wow, what an excellent surprise this book was! The best comparison we can make is the Baxter Children/Family series. Wholesome and faith-building view of what a Christian family should look like (including Christian marriage, parenting, siblings). There are some differences with the Baxters that are interesting. The biggest is probably that the Baxter children attend public school and the Moodys are homeschooled. The Baxter story is better written, but both should be top choices to consider for your children. Here we will share some of what makes this particular series so great. From the acknowledgements at the start of the book on we see direct godly content. We immediately see a picture of a godly family. Dad is described as the spiritual leader of the home. Mom educates the kiddos as a stay-at-home mother. They do their best to work together to train the children up in the way the Lord would have it. The family attends a ‘small conservative evangelical church’. They bless their food, pray together, have family devotion time and more. There is one especially powerful moment where Mom shares that she grew up ‘just going to church on Sundays’ and only reading her Bible when her parents made her, but that she was now proud that her kids had learned a better way and were owning their faith as their own. There are a couple of really neat aspects of this first title in the series. The parents want more children. They share this with the children and use it as an opportunity to share with them about prayer and submitting to God’s will. Another great aspect comes in discipline and correction. The children, even though they are awesome kids in an awesome godly family, are shown making mistakes. The book shows multiple situations where this happens and each time the parents, especially Dad, take the opportunity to provide correction. The kids show repentance and apologize where needed. Serving and devotions are highlighted, including solo and family, and the family often reads about missionaries. Unfortunately, this book is not available new at many online places, but it still available from the publisher’s site and has pretty solid availability from used book sources. It is certainly worth the effort to go out and find a copy of this title and the rest of the series. We feel like any and all children (all family members for that matter) will be able to picture themselves in these stories and be both encouraged and challenged to continue to grow closer to Jesus. A great one to consider reading with your kids as well.

Plot SummaryNote: This information is typically from the publisher.

Godly, children’s reading books can be hard to find, but your search is over. The Moody Family Series are fiction books about a homeschool family. Each book is a wonderful read that will leave you anticipating the sequel! Summer with the Moodys is the first book in the Moody Family Series. This book celebrates the adventures of everyday life in a Christian family. Come along with the Moodys as they help a widowed neighbor, start small businesses for the children, enjoy a family fun night, live normal life, and wrap up the book with two special surprises! Woven throughout the book is the Moodys’ love for the Lord and their enjoyment of time together. Children (parents too!) will love Mr. and Mrs. Moody, Max, Mollie, Mitch, and Maddie—they’ll come away challenged and encouraged. Often parents are concerned about negative examples and role models in books their children are reading. One goal in writing the Moody Series was to eliminate those kinds of examples replacing them with positive, godly ones. One mom wrote: “Our children loved it and kept asking me to continue reading. Even our fourteen-year-old got into it. She got inspired to do something to surprise her parents—clean out the garage, with the help of her younger siblings. It took me a while to realize that your book had prompted the idea! Thank you so much for using your gift of writing in such a wholesome way.” ~ Gerlinde Summer with the Moodys grew out of the need we saw for godly, children’s reading material. This book was written to encourage Christian families to a closer walk with Jesus, to a greater intimacy in family relationships, and to a focus on serving and working–all wrapped in a fiction book. Reading comprehension level: ages 7-12 Read aloud comprehension level: ages 4 and up The book is also illustrated with one drawing per chapter.

Scripture Reflection

Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.

— Matthew 7:13-14
