The story revolves around stuffed animals coming to life and telling “the real story” for fairy tales. Young readers do hear this unfortunate line early to help set this context: “The kids all know not to spoil our secret” i.e., keeping it from the adult, as “that would ruin the magic for everybody. Also, the solution for Goldilocks involves her sneaking into her own home so she doesn’t get in trouble with her parents. There is a stuffed animal that is rude and grumpy during the story telling. One of the first things we hear him saying is, “all I want is for your breath to smell better, but that’s not happening, is it?”. Later he remarks, “Serves her right. If she’s going to act like a snotty little brat, then her hair should be the color of boogers!” There is a bit of “potty humor”. A story transition says, “but” and a character comments, “That’s a big but” and all the kids laugh. We also hear that stinky, who is a skunk, has a “smelly but” and he is said to have a “butt burp” and “tail toots”. A wolf says, “and we sniff our own butts”. A character remarks, “ah, fudgedaboutit”. We also hear a flippant exclamation of “Heavens!”.

Our Thoughts
We found this book while trying to find more graphic novel alternatives for Christian parents to share with their early readers. Honestly, whenever we see a book aiming to be funny today we get a bit nervous, but this one, while not perfect, didn’t have too much in the way of going too far to make a joke. And it was pretty funny. In this one early readers are presented a fun idea, to use their imaginations to dream up new endings. After hearing the original story a young boy remarks, “The story can’t end that way… Goldilocks didn’t learn her lesson!... How can that be the end? Goldilocks didn’t say, “I’m sorry or anything! That’s just wrong!!!”. Which isn’t a bad point. Maybe you can dream up your own endings with your child. There is certainly a bit of content to consider, but this is one we Recommend.

The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb. By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward.
— Psalm 19:7-11
