The biggest issue to be aware of (a common one) is that Stella is not the kindest to her little sister. There are many moments where we wish the author had used the opportunity to show more love and kindness that we want to see modeled in our children’s relationships with each other. On a related note, we see Stella being a bit disrespectful to adults (this is not frequent or over the top, but it is present). At one point she says an unkind lunchroom monitor has “mean little goober eyes”. She later says she “hates” him. There are a few instances where she is dishonest as well. She also “wishes” for things she wants (clicking her heels together like in The Wizard of Oz). She refers to unkind kids as “Meanies”. A few other things to be aware of: Stella comments that her pregnant mother looks like the “chocolate buddahs” sold at their candy store. There is a reference to the music artist Prince (aka “the artist formerly known as Prince”). Stella’s 5-year-old sister Penny calls her stuffed animal her “boyfriend”. The term “poophead” is used once and “poop” is used a handful of times.

Our Thoughts
Although not perfect (see above), this is a refreshingly light and sweet story for young girls (especially considering it is a secular title). This book, the start of a series, is one to consider for your young readers. It has a handful of really nice illustrations. It also has a few nice elements we appreciated, including encouraging young kids to be writers and highlighting expanded vocabulary.

Meet Stella Batts. She is eight-years old and she loves to write. She loves to write lists; like her favorite things and kids in her class. And she's writing her autobiography ("That means it's all about me"). Stella's favorite color is yellow and she LOVES fudge. As a matter of fact, there is a special fudge counter at her family's candy store because fudge is one of her favorite things to eat! But Stella has just one problem----her name. A boy from her class keeps calling her "SMELLA" after she trips on their class nature walk ("I don't even want to say what I landed in, it was too gross, so I'm going to leave out that part In this early chapter book series, the ups and downs of Stella's life are charmingly chronicled.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother'—which is the first commandment with a promise—'so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.' Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
— Ephesians 6:1-4
