Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content

As far as concerning content, this one has a decent list of things to be aware of, but none rise above the line of being highly concerning. The main character Yash certainly isn’t perfect. Early in the book he asks the principal, “But couldn’t you – like – lie?”. When put in a bad situation he considered trying to get a favor from the mayor or someone else influential. Early in the book he and the super popular friends play football in the mall at complete disregard to everyone else. Even worse, when the angry security guard realizes who he is, he completely changes his attitude. One character is known for pranks and some of his pranks are referenced. In the past he used a cherry-bomb and destroyed a boy's bathroom, mentions it caused massive destruction. He puts firecrackers into a homemade pizza, which explodes in the oven. He superglues lockers shut, puts gum in chairs, freezes Mentos into ice cubes and BBQ sauce into locker slits. These ideas should obviously not be put in front of some kids whose maturity is not yet where it should be. Another character who is always complaining rails against rising sea levels, “It’s all because of climate change… because of the big countries that treat the environment like a garbage dump”. Global Warming is also referenced once. There are two sibling characters that have a really bad relationship and are always fighting. The terms “slug” is a derogatory term for someone who is very unathletic. The following terms are made: jerked around, nerd, freak show, cave people, rejects, New Dork City, and jerk. One character references “an elf, or a dwarf or goblin or some other kind of weirdo”. At one point a kid tunes out a story from an adult because it is “so boring”. The Beach Boys are referenced multiple times as well as Genesis (old rock band). At various points “The Walking Dead”, Halo, Fortnight, King Kong, The Mighty Ducks, Godzilla, Bad News Bears, The Illuminati, Predator and zombies are referenced. Someone compares an event to “a scene from The Purge” (a horror movie). Someone threatens to “take that arm and wrap it around his throat boa-constrictor style. Worldly wisdom is shared, “fairness is more important than anything”. Someone is said to be addicted to romance novels, “each more passionate than the next”. We also hear of a “cheesy romance movie”.

Our Thoughts

Korman turns his master storytelling sights on summer school and an unlikely group of kids drawn together during it. This is a story format you may be familiar with, jumping back and forth between a set of core characters each chapter. This one is, as you will probably expect if you are familiar with this author, is entertaining and light. There are certainly things to consider above, but overall this is a really solid story with a group of kids you will really pull for. It also has a nice sports theme woven in. Nice, heartwarming ending. This one will come down to how you feel about the content above for your particular reader. There aren’t any huge concerns, but there is a bit to consider above. We went back and forth, but decided to set this one as Recommended.

Plot SummaryNote: This information is typically from the publisher.Use with caution

From Gordon Korman, the New York Times bestselling author of Restart, comes a hilarious new story about a group of underdogs who come together when they are forced to attend summer school—for failing PE. Yash is the best athlete at Robinette Middle School—so good, in fact, that he’s already playing on the high school’s JV sports teams. Imagine his shock when he learns that his JV practices have kept him from earning a state-mandated credit for eighth-grade PE. To graduate, he has to take Physical Education Equivalency—PEE, also known as “Slugfest”—in summer school. Yash gets to know his fellow “slugs”: Kaden, an academic superstar who’s physically hopeless; twins Sarah and Stewart, who are too busy trying to kill each other to do any real PE; Jesse, a notorious prankster; Arabella, who protests everything; and Cleo, a natural athlete who has sworn off sports. But when one of them tries to blow the lid off a scandal that could make all their time in summer school a waste, Yash is forced to take drastic action. Teaming up with the most hapless crew in school can really surprise a person. And their teacher might be hiding the biggest surprise yet...

Scripture Reflection

How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Praise be to you, Lord; teach me your decrees. With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth. I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.

— Psalm 119:9-16
