Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content

There is nothing “concerning” about this book, but we want to take a minute to explain it here. We meet Jessica and she is really sad on the playground. Then later when Sarah visits her house, she sees some things that “make her sad”. We don’t get details. The details aren’t the point. A child could read this and never catch on that this is pointing to a traumatic situation (and still get all of the benefits, such as the focus on prayer). But what is really neat is that this can be used as a really great teaching tool for the intentional Christian parent. That said, we wanted to bring it up here as this is certainly not as light as many children’s books typically for this audience. This is something much more, but a bit of weight comes with that.

Our Thoughts

This short book is really unique and unlike anything we have read before. It is a book for a young child, but it also is set up as a tool, a guide in the form of a story, to be able to gently talk about a challenging topic with your child (what if you as a Christian child found out a young friend was going through a very traumatic situation). This is awesome and something we need more of as Christian parents. Unlike a recent title we reviewed (Simon Sort of Says), which tried to tackle coping with tragic situations using humor in a kid’s story from a secular perspective (leading to a ton of very concerning content being thrown in), this book achieves its goal beautifully from a Christian perspective. This success comes from pointing kids to the place we are all supposed to run in challenging situations, to our Savior in fervent ongoing prayer. In this case, we get to see a child, with guidance from Mom, doing this. This is shown in a way that can only come from hard-earned wisdom by the author (we can only properly share what we ourselves have experienced and walked through). A few other things of note: The artwork is beautiful and will certainly draw the attention of young readers. There is a really kind dedication by the author to her mother, and it includes the note: “This wouldn’t be possible if God hadn’t given me you as a best friend”. The story starts with a young girl sacrificing what she really wants to do to be a blessing to another child who is obviously sad. This sacrifice leads to an important friendship (a great lesson!). Upon approaching this sad girl, the main character says, “I know that God always has my back. My mommy says He’s not surprised by my problems, so he already knows how to fix them.” There is quite a bit of wisdom shown in these short pages. We see much on the power of prayer, how God often works through prayer, hearing His still-small-voice, going to parents for advice and more. We also see a positive light on giving gifts, writing to God, Sunday School and ministry. In fact, ministry is made very tangible here for kids. We see a reference to John 1:17 (“Every good gift and perfect gift comes from above.” This one is HIGHLY Recommended. Note: Purchases of books like this encourage Christian authors to keep writing and shows publishers that we care about this type of content and want more of it!

Scripture Reflection

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws. I have suffered much; preserve my life, Lord, according to your word. Accept, Lord, the willing praise of my mouth, and teach me your laws. Though I constantly take my life in my hands, I will not forget your law. The wicked have set a snare for me, but I have not strayed from your precepts. Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart. My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.

— Psalm 119:105-112
