Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content
The biggest consideration with books of this type is best expressed by the author himself: “My greatest concern in writing this series is my limited human ability to appropriately represent the God of the Bible through the use of metaphors”. He makes it clear though that, “My purpose in writing these words is to point you once more to the glorious God of love, His Son Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and the radical intersection of supernatural love through the redemption power of the Gospel”. We say the good far outweighs any potential concern. You must of course decide for yourself and your home. There is enough depth and just a bit of content here that makes this not a book for the youngest and most sensitive readers. Below we will give a glimpse at this, but note that it never comes across as scary, overly violent, dark, etc. This is more about helping you determine the fit for your younger readers. A few comments/things to be aware of: It is mentioned that an area is so bad that “Death was the reward that prisoners pleaded for”. A young girl they met has lost her parents in a terrible war. There is a time when the characters are said to be drinking “ale”. It is never implied it is alcohol and there is no drunkenness, but some may assume that. There is some sneaking around and dishonesty. There is a reference to an oracle. The ‘worldly’ one is shown as a total farce for “entertainment”. Eventually they meet an ‘oracle’ from the people representing the Jews and we find out she is really what we would refer to as a prophet. A female spy is said to be conducting “emotional seduction” (nothing sexual ever said or implied, hence ‘emotional’). An impossible feeling mission is referred to as “suicide”. There is a love story unfolding so there is a bit of focus on that type of content (falling for someone). It is emotional, but completely clean. At one point the main character kills a guard. It is shown as wrong. A past war where humans fought AI is referenced. The thought of this may spook some sensitive readers, especially with all of the AI focus today.

Our Thoughts
Let’s just start out by saying this… this book is fantastic. We have seen and enjoyed a lot of Christian allegory that follows the overall arc of the Biblical narrative, especially where we find ourselves as Christians today. This book, the first in a lengthy series from a long-time faithful Christian author, does something new. This story draws the reader into a really interesting futuristic space-focused world and society, only to eventually realize that they are seeing a brilliant retelling of the exodus story from the Old Testament unfolding before their eyes. How cool is that!? And the execution of the idea is excellent! Similar to a main takeaway we saw in a recent review of a book for a younger audience (The Ark, the Reed, and the Fire Cloud - The Amazing Max & Liz), these types of stories lead readers to imagine the real story from the Scriptures in a much deeper way, asking questions we never thought of, noticing details in a brand-new light. This really drives engagement back to the corresponding portion of the Bible. Have we ever really thought about what it was like for Moses as he started to be awakened from one of the most privileged lives in all of history? We wanted to make sure to point out that in this story we see a glimpse forward to the Savior of the World (referred to as “The Merchant” in this story because “one day He will purchase us and set us free). There couldn’t be a more encouraging thing for the future of this series. There is so much more we could share and say, but we won’t give away any more because it is a great one to read alongside your kiddo and then discuss. If your reader is mature enough to enjoy this type of story (author recommends 10+ as a guideline), this one is HIGHLY Recommended! It will also keep readers busy, as the series is planned for 12 books, with several already available (from “Perfect Praise” publishing, what a great name!). Even the cover art is fantastic, which should really help excite your readers to dig in. Enjoy!

Nice short review. We like the thoughts on intended audience and summary section.
Short succinct review, which works here, but likely want to be a bit cautious on books that may be a bit closer to the line.
Read ReviewA very favorable review from a young reviewer who is excited about the series.
Keep in mind this is from an “avid reading teenage reader” when using this helpful resource.
Read ReviewWhile helpful, always be cautious of reviews on sites where anyone can post.
Read ReviewBlessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.
