Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content

The main character draws a lot and there are a few instances where the art is shown that we wish were not included. At one point the main character draws an image of the “annual first day of school zombie apocalypse” where kids are shown as zombies across campus. This is meant to be light and funny, but the images would be a bit disturbing to some. In another place we see an image of him chewing his leg off to escape a trap. There is also an unfortunate picture where he draws a back to school history book and we see the word ‘boring’. To make it even worse, the image is a bit weird and when dad sees it he suggests he not show his mother. Another image shows a lunch room seating chart segmented by the coolness of various groups (e.g., anime dorks, computer geeks). Christian parents should also know there are a lot of references in here that you either won’t want your kids be encouraged towards or at least would want to pray about. These include Deadpool, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Percy Jackson, Blackish, Amulet, Bone, Dragon Ball Z, Instagram, Call of Duty. We also see a title called, “Socky Horror Picture Show”, an obviously bad reference to a horror movie. The main character acts different ways in different parts of town with different crowds and this is never really shown as being wrong. We also see him thinking unkind thoughts at times. The term “OMG” is a couple times along with “What a tool”. Finally, we want to mention one item from a later book. In one of the sequels the author uses the story to rail against book censorship. This is a more complex topic than we often realize as there are certainly books that should not be put in front of children or included in a kids library, for example. If you let them read this series this is something you will definitely want to talk with them about it.

Our Thoughts

One of the toughest things about graphic novels is making sure they get into the hands of the right audience (although admittedly, many should be put in front of no audience at all). It is important to know this is not a book for the youngest of readers. We don’t want to overstate this, as it is a kid’s book (unlike a couple graphic novels from the kids’ section we have reviewed). It’s just important that parents understand that while this is a graphic novel it should not be considered the same thing as something like, say, the Investigators series. There are a few positive things in this one. This book does a nice job of really showing what it is like to be the one who feels different in a situation. The main focus of that is being one of the only people of color in a school, but there are others too, like seeing life through the eyes of someone who is seen as weird or someone self-conscious because of their family’s wealth and name recognition. The main family dynamic is mostly a really solid one and friendship is shown in a positive light. There are also a few really solid moments, like when the main character connects with and shows kindness to the character that he and all the others previously just viewed as extremely weird. This is one to Prayerfully Consider for you reader.

Plot SummaryNote: This information is typically from the publisher.Use with caution

A graphic novel about starting over at a new school where diversity is low and the struggle to fit in is real. Seventh grader Jordan Banks loves nothing more than drawing cartoons about his life. But instead of sending him to the art school of his dreams, his parents enroll him in a prestigious private school known for its academics, where Jordan is one of the few kids of color in his entire grade. As he makes the daily trip from his Washington Heights apartment to the upscale Riverdale Academy Day School, Jordan soon finds himself torn between two worlds—and not really fitting into either one. Can Jordan learn to navigate his new school culture while keeping his neighborhood friends and staying true to himself?

Scripture Reflection

All a person's ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans. The Lord works out everything to its proper end—even the wicked for a day of disaster.

— Proverbs 16:2-3
