Nothing major here from a concerning standpoint. The biggest thing some parents will want to know is that one of the boy’s backstories involves Covid and there are a few looks and references back to it. He lost his mom, he believes, from complications from catching the virus. This also brings up the heaviest scene of an otherwise light book. In flashbacks this young man remembers seeing his mother in the hospital with machines and tubes and doctors. She eventually passes. Since then, he has pulled away and checked out from the other kids he used to interact with. To keep the story moving there are times when one boy skips his last class and rides across town. The most dangerous part of the book has the boys setting themselves up to get struck by lightning, which they do and survive. There are times when the two main characters are not the kindest to each other. This resolves pretty nicely, but seemed unnecessary and unexpected when reading. One character makes the comment that “dead is no joke. It’s permanent and final”, which as Christians we know is completely false. This is likely a comment you will likely want to address with your young reader. In a similar way, the term “basically good” is good to describe people, which we know as a modern way to look at man. There is also a point where one boy says that he keeps getting locked out of TikTok (due to his memory). There are also uses of shut up, santa, the Easter bunny, idiot, jerk, moron.

Our Thoughts
We are thankful for Gordan Korman. He has maintained a long string of really entertaining books with super interesting plots while staying a significant amount cleaner on average than other current popular authors (e.g., Gibbs). In this title, we jump back and forth between two characters who become linked in a really interesting way that will make many Korman fans think back to an earlier title, Restart. This is one we can easily Recommend.

What happens when you lose your mind … and someone else finds it? Theo and Reef don’t know what’s happening to them. They’ll be doing something totally normal and they’ll suddenly have flashes of memory – but the memories belong to someone else. And at the same time, their own memories are starting to … vanish. For Reef, this is a big problem, because memories are all he has left of his mom. For Theo, it’s strange because the new memories give him freedom he doesn’t have with his bossy dad. Theo and Reef are complete strangers, living in completely different parts of the city. But they share something very weird and mysterious … and it’s becoming more and more important that they find each other and stop the memory slide before they’ve forgotten their own lives entirely.

How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
