Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content
Very little to worry about in this Christian title (one of our favorite sentences to write!). Late in the book, in the middle of a great part, a very rude boy makes a rude comment to Micah. He snaps back unkindly to him, commenting that “I know I shouldn’t have, but I couldn’t help it”. We see very little of it in the story, but sadly, the book hints that Micah and his sister don’t have the best relationship. There is a glimmer of hope at the end, but even there we read, “He couldn’t remember the last time she’d been so nice to him”. We are told, from his perspective that she yells at him to get out of her room, thinks he is an idiot and isn’t supportive. Note that an illustration shows her as a stereotypical moody teenage girl. We read Micah saying, “It wasn’t a complete lie. But it mostly was… Is it a lie if you really hope its true?” (trying to be nice, but it is unfortunate in a kids book). Harry Potter is mentioned in passing (specifically the theme song from the movies). Micah refers to himself as an idiot once when frustrated.

Our Thoughts
Reviewing Christian books is so refreshing. We get to see a flip of our normal reviews, which tend to consist of a list as long as your leg of concerning content. Instead with Christian titles we get to share a lengthy summary of positive, faith-building content with almost nothing to worry about. And that is the case here. First and foremost, this book has a very strong, almost impossible to miss biblical message aimed right at kids. The main message is that God has made each of us uniquely and we can trust Him, even when we haven’t seen it yet, that we are talented and gifted and that we can discover it and reap joy from this. This may sound simple, but honestly (and we don’t say this lightly), this has the chance to be life-changing for a child. Near the end Micah says, “I’ve learned to trust Him and the plans He has for me”. Even before he discovers what it means for himself we see the impact of being raised in a Christian home (“I know God created me special” along with a supporting verse, Psalm 139:14). Other things we really liked: The author dedication includes “To my delightfully silly son. May God bless you and nurture your talents for His glory and your joy” (love that last part!). The section/chapter endings include a key verse and questions for young readers that help engage them and drive towards the key takeaways. We see child-focused encouragements (“Instead of comparing yourself to others, how can you be motivated by their gifts?”) Solid illustrations. The story is lightly funny without the need to delve into immorality to deliver a laugh. This is so refreshing after so much of the “comedy” we see, especially in books aimed at boys. While not appearing much, we see wise Christian parenting, mostly by its impact (“I remember my parents telling me that the best ways to protect yourself from hurtful people is to pray for them”). Great friendships are shown (in one Vlog Micah says, “I’m so thankful for the friends God has given me” – How great is that!). A wide variety of talents that kids may have are showcased, in the light of being gifts from God. This one is a great reminder that God has created us and made us each immensely talented. May this challenge us as parents to make sure we know this about ourselves and our children and to reinforce it! May we all lean into who God made us to be, no matter what age we are. This is one we HIGHLY Recommend!

Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.
— Matthew 7:13-14
