Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content

For this genre (funny stories filled with goofy humor), this book is lighter on the concerns than most, but there are still a few things to know. The worst comes when the main character gives nicknames to a group of kids who are unkind to him and his friends (Gangly Fuzz Face, Pork Belly Pig Breath, Corned Beef Boy, Crazy Eyes Jemima and Frankenstein's Nephew). These names come up a handful of times in the book. While I am sure the author thought these would be funny, as Christians we are called to pray for our enemies and show kindness and love and this obviously doesn't fit. At the start of the book, the character is very unhappy about moving. Also at the start he and his brother squabble and call each other a couple names. There is a teacher who is shown as conceited and is unkind to anyone who doesn't have impressive super powers. He says thing like 'shut up', 'idiot', 'freak'. The nice thing is this is shown in a negative light. There are a few random statements that we wish weren't there: 'she is quite a fan of horror movies', 'now make the noise of a seal being run over by a combine harvester' (example of an absurd noise), 'pee on a hot BBQ (grill)' (example of an absurd smell), 'fell over like he had too many drinks at the Christmas party'. Finally, a few of the drawings are a bit odd, mainly of the villain. It may be worth flipping through the book from the library or looking at the images online to get an idea of the artwork.

Our Thoughts

For those looking for an alternative to other silly/funny books like Timmy Failure, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Big Nate, etc. this feels like one to consider. While not perfect, this book has themes like friendship and valuing those the world labels as not good enough. It also feels like much lighter in the concerning content category. The story is a bit wacky, but enjoyable. The featuring of super heroes, especially with a normal boy getting into the action, is something many will enjoy. The fact that it has illustrations, even if a bit odd, will be something most kids will be excited to see.

Plot SummaryNote: This information is typically from the publisher.Use with caution

When Murph Cooper begins his new school several weeks into the year, he can't help but feel a bit out of his depth. And it's not because he's worried about where to sit, making friends, and fitting in. It's because his mom has accidentally enrolled him at a school for superheroes. And unlike his fellow students, who can control the weather or fly or conjure tiny horses from thin air, Murph has no special abilities whatsoever. But Murph's totally normal abilities might just be what the world needs. Because not far away is a great big bad guy who is half man and half wasp, and his mind is abuzz with evil plans . . . and when he comes after the best and the brightest, it's up to Murph to be the real hero. With black-and-white illustrations throughout, this laugh-out-loud story proves that heroes come in all shapes and sizes.

Scripture Reflection

As soon as it was night, the believers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue. Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

— Acts 17:10-11
