Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content

We are giving this particular title in the series an Avoid. This will surprise people familiar with these light and funny books. The reason? Much of this book takes place in a place called a “séance factory” (as in seances attempting to contact dead spirits). Now why is this in a light kid’s book? Humor. The author is making an extended joke around the similarity in sound between “science” and “séance”. He does something similar with the two meanings of “medium” (medium in size and a medium as the person who someone would go to for a séance).

Our Thoughts

We reviewed this book after a Christian parent reached out to warn us about this sequel in a series we had previously reviewed and suggested. While we probably wouldn’t go as far to fully include InvestiGATORS in our recent series of “book series that go off the rails”, it is certainly a consideration for an honorable mention. Without question this book is an example of something we should all be careful about… joking around about things we shouldn’t. We are told to flee from darkness. Taking evil too lightly is a common mistake. We plan to be intentional and avoid this… especially when our children are involved. For that reason, we are giving this book an Avoid and downgrading the original series to make sure parents are aware in advance when considering these books.

Scripture Reflection

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.

— Ephesians 5:8-11
