At one point Pa tells Ma that she looks like she has been putting on weight (meant to be a funny situation as she is wearing multiple aprons). Mentions a boy who repeated a grade and grandma mentions she thought he was “just dumb”. There are a few unfortunate side comments from siblings (e.g., “useless girls”).

Our Thoughts
This book follows a young girl who hears stories from her Grandma (and a couple other family members). Many of these stories are explicitly Christian. They are meant to be sweet and build character. Example lessons include watching out for pride, relying on God’s wisdom and the importance and benefits of obedience. This book also includes a really neat glimpse at “a simpler time”. Church is mentioned as an everyday part of life, which is refreshing. While we always love to suggest reading out loud to your child, this series may be an excellent candidate for that as it will inevitably lead to questions and conversations about previous times. This is the start of what looks to be a beautiful, sweet series. Enjoy.

How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
— Psalm 119:9-11
