Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content

There is a decent amount of focus around equal treatment of girls in certain situations, such as basketball. For the most part this is done well (see below). There is one scene where a man walks into a hardware store. His daughter offers to help because her father isn’t available. The man says he will just come back tomorrow. The young lady gets VERY upset, very out of proportion with what happened, and calls the man a jerk. In a similar fashion, a girl gets really upset when the brand-new girls basketball team doesn’t have the same treatment as the boy’s team. She brings up a complaint about the word “lady” in “Lady Bears”. She grumbles and complains while others celebrate. Here are a few items we wanted to point out: A minor dare is made (to try baby food) A small simple kiss is shown between a couple after a sweet gesture Author’s note (and in one case the acknowledgements) mentions “Roller Girl” and “Smile” graphic novels as well as the movie Hoosiers. The following terms are made, several multiple times: holy moley, Oh my God, Holy…

Our Thoughts

If we are being honest, every time we hear of a graphic novel based on real events from the 70s, 80s or 90s we get nervous. Often the content is very out of sync with the format and inevitable audience. Fortunately we were pleasantly surprised here. This is one of those rare cases where the sweet looking cover of the graphic novel matches well what young readers will find inside. This book is light and entertaining, while also hitting on an interesting historical aspect most won’t be familiar with. This story shows a glimpse into the advancement of sports for girls in high school. And it does it well (for the most part, see a couple exceptions above). Unlike much of the “woke” approaches into these types of issues, here we instead see a fair treatment. For example, the book brings up the real challenge of how to pay for the additional cost of additional sports for girls on a fixed and limited budget (here the girls get the idea to go out and sell tickets, with the graphic showing them selling outside of a church and other places). The artwork is great and really fits well with the story and setting. There is also a nice focus on friendships and an interesting supplemental author’s note. We have set out to find better graphic novel options for Christian parents. While we have not been successful nearly as often as we would like, it always brings a great deal of joy when we are. As long as you are comfortable with the set of potentially concerning content above, we feel this is one that most young readers can safely enjoy. We have this as a Recommended option for Christian parents.

Plot SummaryNote: This information is typically from the publisher.Use with caution

A work of fiction inspired by a true story, Matt Tavares’s debut graphic novel dramatizes the historic struggle for gender equality in high school sports. It is 1975 in Indiana, and the Wilkins Regional High School girls’ basketball team is in their rookie season. Despite being undefeated, they practice at night in the elementary school and play to empty bleachers. Unlike the boys’ team, the Lady Bears have no buses to deliver them to away games and no uniforms, much less a laundry service. They make their own uniforms out of T-shirts and electrical tape. And with help from a committed female coach, they push through to improbable victory after improbable victory. Illustrated in full color, this story about the ongoing battle of women striving for equality in sports rings with honesty, bravery, and heart.

Scripture Reflection

Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'

— 1 Peter 1:13-16
