Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content
Note: This review is for the graphic novel only. We have not yet reviewed the original novel. There is almost nothing to be concerned about here. There is a brief section with a decent bit of talk about things like ghosts, house spirits, mountain spirits. People are trying to figure out mysterious happenings. Note: They realize it was actually Heidi sleepwalking. A mean rich woman tells a servant to take get rid of a group of kittens. He instead takes them to another room to hide them, indicating to young girls not to say anything. Heidi’s shepherd friend describes school in a negative way. The author’s note mentions losing her son and husband to consumption, which may be a bit frightening to think about for some young readers.

Our Thoughts
We came across this graphic novel while searching for graphic novel options we can share with Christian parents that are at least safe. This is actually a much harder task than nearly anyone would expect given the state of the content being produced and placed into this format. Fortunately, here we were successful. Heidi comes into her previously reclusive uncle’s life and the impact is beautiful. There are refreshing characters. Heidi is sweet and genuine. It also deals with loss well and shining our light into the lives of others. There is also a lot of nice bonus content at the end. We should also mention that this book has some of the most beautiful artwork we have seen in a graphic novel. There are few words in this version, but the illustrations tell the story very well. In the picture at the end of the person who adapted this book, she is shown wearing a large cross necklace, which is great. While the current state of graphic novels is bleak, and we certainly advise encouraging your kids away from them, this is one you can feel safe providing to your young reader. We have it as a Recommended option.

Discover the heartwarming magic of Johanna Spyri’s beloved tale in this gorgeous graphic novel adaptation. From the author of the critically acclaimed Anne of Green Gables: A Graphic Novel comes another thoughtfully retold children’s classic. When young Heidi is sent to live with her grandfather in a small shepherd’s hut in the Swiss Alps, everyone expects him to turn her away. He has a bad reputation: mean, growly, and harsh as the cold mountain winds. But Heidi is quick to take on any challenge, whether it’s keeping an eye on the rebellious goats, learning to read, or melting Grandfather’s icy heart. Heidi’s adventures take her up and down her beloved mountain, from picnics in the high alpine meadows all the way to the distant streets of Frankfurt and a city life she could never have imagined. But when homesickness strikes, Heidi must weigh old friendships with new ones and find her place in an expanding world. Given new life as a graphic novel in artist Ofride’s warm, folk art–inspired style, Heidi celebrates the joy of storytelling, the wonders of nature, and the healing power of kindness.

Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
