We wanted to review this title because we know many Christian parents are looking for short, sweet, easy readers for their children (and many of us have been duped by series dawning smiling girls on colorful covers, as in the aforementioned Ivy & Bean). Fortunately, this one didn’t disappoint. The cute illustrations do in fact line up with the content.

This title features a few elements we really liked. There are kids and families that likely find themselves underrepresented in books and movies. Here dad is Chinese and mom’s family is from Germany, creating a beautiful mix in Gracie Wei. This isn’t just mentioned once. The author takes efforts to weave in things like cultural foods into their home from these cultures. Even for less diverse family setups, it is a nice reminder to young readers of the different dynamics across the homes we are called to serve and love on as Christians.

We also like the lessons shared in this title and the sweet family dynamic shown between both Gracie and her sister as well as her parents.

This particular title focuses on not worrying about perfection and allowing yourself to step out even if you might mess up (and showing yourself some grace when you do). At one point dad coaches her on this. When Gracie asks, “What if I mess up?”, he responds, “What if you don’t? And if you do, it’ll be okay. We all mess up sometimes”. Our very favorite moment is when Gracie steps out to show very selfless love to another classmate, one that has not been kind to her up to that point.

There are a few things to consider in the previous section, but overall this is one we Recommend.
