Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content

It is really important for you to make sure that your child is mature enough for the content in this book (see more discussion on this below). For this book, the content of this section is not meant to point out unfortunate content we wish wasn’t there (as is typical of secular books). This story transitions and ends in such a faith-building and positive way, one that redeems everything we will list here. This section is simply meant to point out what you should know to make the decision on when your particular child is ready for this title. That is an important distinction. Here is what you should know. — This book hits many mature topics. There is insight throughout the book on anorexia, its impacts (obsession with food, extensive lying, serious health impacts, etc.) and its root causes. It shows the ugliness and emptiness of the worldly popular world that many children desire to be a part of (shown from behind the scenes of something within it). Devotions shine light on the dangers of pornography (which is wisely tied in similarity to “romance novels”), premarital sex and the ever-slipping line of activities that lead to it (and the boundaries to avoid it), drugs/alcohol use, etc. In one very serious moment a councilor shares that a friend took her own life. There is a particularly emotional devotion that addresses physical and sexual abuse. One boy has been physically abused by his parents. A friend has a boyfriend who it implies has physically abused her. An adult female councilor shares that as a teen she was offered a ride home from a boy she had a crush on for a long time who raped her and threatened to lie if she told anyone. A male councilor shares that a man who befriended him as a child sexually abused him as a child for multiple years. This issue is handled incredibly carefully and kids are left with excellent lessons on how to handle these situations and heal from a very godly perspective… but obviously this is heavy. — This is also a particularly important book to make sure your child finishes if they start it. For over half of this longer story, we see life through the eyes of a young lady… and what we see is not pretty. She is shallow, self-centered, disrespectful, dishonest, deceitful, manipulative, overly boy focused, overly looks focused and anorexic. This makes the ending of redemption and restoration that much sweeter, BUT in the same way we see with the Bible, we are shown the ugly side of things without Him first. — The words “sex” and “sexy” are mentioned several times. There is a young child who reads romance novels. There are a couple of covers that are described, e.g., “a powerfully built man passionately embracing a half-dressed beauty as she ripped the shirt off his muscular body”. The word “kinky” is mentioned once. Many characters are very focused on looks and describe guys with things like “hottie” and “smoking hot”. Again, this is shown in a negative light, especially towards the end of the book, but good to know it is there.

Our Thoughts

You can tell the author has a heart and desire for bringing godly encouragement, healing and especially truth into the lives of children and teens. She has obviously seen a lot from her experience with camp settings and working with kids and is now using this book to bring it to a larger audience. These lessons come in the middle of a very interesting story based around a child from a Christian family who has veered from the faith and fallen into a bad crowd and seen her whole personality completely change. She agrees to attend a Christian camp as an assistant counselor, but only because it will allow her to avoid a treatment plan she dreads even more. The lessons on these important topics are primarily delivered through campfire devotions, cabin devotions and one-on-one conversations with one of the fantastic Christ-centered characters who run the camp or whose lives were previously transformed by God through the camp. — In addition to the mature topics above, the book hits on prayer, salvation, real love, marriage, dating, friendship, the value of parents and other godly adults, faith even when things go wrong, scripture, daily Bible reading, Youth Group, helping others, overcoming hurts, confidence, dating, etc. — This is an excellent Christian title and we would encourage any and all children to eventually read it, but it is something that a parent will want to make sure their child is ready for. That being said, if parents don’t provide Christian sources like this to reinforce biblical lessons, eventually (and much earlier than we would like) the world will step in and teach its warped and perverted view of these key issues. It would be better by leaps and bounds to push the envelope a bit here and allow your child to be reinforced on mature topics from a godly perspective than from the latest Marvel film or a friend from the neighborhood or public/private school. Even better, if you read this with your child imagine the conversations you could have along the way. Something to really consider. The title ends beautifully in a story of radical transformation and restoration that only Christ can bring. This one is certainly HIGHLY Recommended.

Plot SummaryNote: This information is typically from the publisher.

A girl with an eating disorder, in denial and angry at God. A camp director with a handful of ropes, two cardboard cutouts, and a radical plan to touch the hearts of the campers. An athletic hunk, a stolen hat, and a flaw-filled prank that has the entire camp in an uproar. This summer, lives are about to change forever. The last place Kelly Martin wants to spend her summer vacation is volunteering at a Christian camp. But it’s either that or be forced by her parents into a program for girls with eating disorders. Prepared to be surrounded by boring religious fanatics, Kelly is surprised to meet genuine friends who pull her into the first crazy prank of the summer. Even more unexpected is the handsome fellow counselor who starts noticing her. But it’s the radical campfire talks that touch Kelly’s heart most of all, sparking a longing for change. But that would mean choosing to trust God. And Kelly vowed she’d never do that again.

Scripture Reflection

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

— Romans 12:1-2
