Jarell, the main character, starts out the book completely distracted in class. He says he finds himself almost unavoidably drawn to his drawings. It is presented as if he almost can’t help it. While this helps move the story along it is not a great message for a generation of kids that seem to be losing their ability to focus (seemingly in perfect parallel with the amount of screentime they are taking in). This book does have a sci-fi type aspect to it. This brings in mention of things like a “godess”, a “sorcerer”, a “god” (in the mythology sense). Jarell meets another main character, a girl, and they are not the nicest to each other at first. They take small shots at each other, roll eyes, etc. A few other items: The game “The Sims” is referenced in passing. Someone says, “What the…” (never completed, leaving the reader’s mind to fill in the blank. Another character says, “By the gods”.

Our Thoughts
This is a short, fast-moving, exciting adventure story. If you are looking for a story that may grab the attention of early or reluctant readers, especially boys, and are comfortable with the few potentially concerning items above then this book and series may be just right (and certainly a better choice than most of the recent graphic novel content targeted at that same audience). Carefully consider the items above. If you are comfortable with the content above for your reader, this is one we Recommend.

The start of a thrilling, highly illustrated series about a boy who finds a portal to a legendary world in his local barbershop . . . and learns he's the hero they've been waiting for. For younger fans of Black Panther and Last Gate of the Emperor! Jarell has never quite known where he belongs. He's ignored at home and teased at school for wanting to draw instead of playing sports with the other boys. The only place he's ever felt truly at ease is his local barbershop where the owner hangs Jarell's art up on the walls. When Jarell discovers a hidden portal in the barbershop, he's transported to a magical world that's unlike anything he's seen before. But it's not just the powerful gods and dangerous creatures that makes this world different--it's that everyone believes Jarell is the hero they've been waiting for.
