Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content
This book has very little in the way of concerning content. This book has a very light feel, but there are a few parts that step past that and are a bit intense. There is a scene where they seem to be lost forever in a never-ending maze (a frightening concept). There is another where an army of forgotten creatures have taken a hold of one of their group and are pulling them down into sinking sand. There are also a few comments along this line as well, such as when one evil character threatens, “Refuse and I’ll skewer each and every one of them like meat on a spit”. While it is true that there is a decent amount of “magical” related content, this never feels like a huge emphasis, which is pleasantly surprising given the storyline. Early in the book Lily, the main character, gets distracted in class, drawing instead of paying attention. The following terms are used: maggot, freak, stupid, idiot.

Our Thoughts
This one took a bit to capture our interest, but it really did pick up as the book went on. This is very true of the Christian allegory content as well. Once the story settled in the reader sees many parallels to this Christian journey we find ourselves in (we will say it is in the format, not unsimilar to the Chronicles of Narnia and others, where only Believers will likely see it… still very thankful for it!). It starts with references in passing to things like Monks over a manuscript or knights bowing down at an alter, but later moves into characters that remind us of Jesus, satan and others. We see some neat dialog along the way, such as when one character says, “Mankind is a race of creators, young lady. It’s in your nature, because you bear the mark of the one who crated everything”. When talking about prayer we are told that “the key is to ask for help and know it will come… you’re asking, but you’re not believing… you have to know that the answer will come, even if it’s one you don’t expect”. Late in the book the young reader is told, “You are made new, brave scout. You need not fear your past any longer”. Great stuff. There are aspects of this story that have the potential to really get kids' imaginations going. There is action, but the majority of the book doesn’t feel scary (see exceptions above). We also really like small things, such as this book not making light of the impacts of divorce and its impact on families like we see in so many secular books today. This one has the type of sweet ending we expect from a Christian author (author’s bio mentions writing for Gospel Coalition, desiringGod.org). It ends with a great teaser for the next story, which is always fun. Note that the convenience link below to the publisher’s purchase page has a free discussion guide so make sure to check that out.

An Adventure Novel for Middle-Grade Readers Steeped in Magic, Mystery, and Glimmers of Hope—Book 1 in the Dream Keeper Saga Even though she’s only 12 years old, Lily McKinley already feels the weight of the world’s brokenness. Excellent discussion around the first two books from one of the better review sources we have found. Really appreciated the careful handling of the “magical” content.
Read ReviewWe had never run across this site before! It is focused on adult books. This may be one for Christian parents to bookmark and check out for their own reading.

Would need to see more reviews, but this one didn’t have a lot of detail in the concerning content section (although this book was mostly safe and clean).
Read ReviewVery short in terms of actual review content, but the main text is certainly worth reading
Very little discussion around potentially concerning content.
Read ReviewFor though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
