Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content

The biggest concern is that this is an adult book packaged as a children’s graphic novel (see more discussion in the next section). The most concerning resulting parts are the following (these are middle school girls): We see an illustration of girls looking at a Sears catalog. They say to check out the last page because you can see “a man’s thing”. The girls use a Ouija board. This is illustrated and presented as this cute, innocent, fun activity. One of the newspaper articles shows a feature on ghost hunting with quite a bit of detail. The movie “The Exorcist” is mentioned, with the plot described. When the main character gets a boyfriend, they end up hanging out a ton in the woods together alone. Other concerning items: Early in the book we see an image of the “predators” at the middle school (think bullies). When showing them we see some of their bully-like behavior and description shown. Examples include “French-kissed an 8th grader”, stole gum, has no curfew. Next up the “prey” are shown. Some of these descriptions will likely make kids not feel great about themselves. Descriptions of what make them prey include freckles, being very tall, mom making her own clothes, retainer being out at lunch, having a strange last name. Reference to “hot pants”. A 70’s teacher breakroom is shown with a ton of smoking and gossiping. Friday the 13th is referred to as “bad luck”. There is quite a bit of note passing during class. The main character is 12 and describes having to wear “this weird half undershirt, half bra thing” with a picture shown. She is also shown kissing a poster of John Denver. When bullies are shown we see comments like, “I hate her” and “such a jerk”. There is a comment that “most people don’t realize the danger our planet is in”.

Our Thoughts

This is the latest installment in a new trend Christian parents should be aware of. The book refers to itself as a “graphic memoir”. What that ends up meaning is a grown-up telling their biographical story in a graphic novel with cute, kiddy illustrations. The problem? This means that we end up with an adult book that ends up in the kids section at the library and book store that will immediately look like a children’s book to anyone who sees it. On top of the concerning content above the young reader sees all of these 70s references to Watergate, Nixon, a “senseless war”, the “environmental crisis” and such. While it is nowhere near as concerning as the first of these we reviewed (“Hey Kiddo”, one of the most surprising and concerning books we have ever reviewed), it should still be considered an adult book. These are truly an example of not judging a book by its cover (or in this case, the entire cute comic-form content). This is a very concerning trend for Christian parents to watch out for. One to Avoid when it comes to children.

“Raina Telgemeier fans will lap this up.” — Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books A laugh-out-loud funny and empowering graphic memoir about growing up and finding your voice. Twelve-year-old Cindy has just dipped a toe into seventh-grade drama—with its complicated friendships, bullies, and cute boys—when she earns an internship as a cub reporter at a local newspaper in the early 1970s. A (rare) young female reporter takes Cindy under her wing, and Cindy soon learns not only how to write a lede, but also how to respectfully question authority, how to assert herself in a world run by men, and—as the Watergate scandal unfolds—how brave reporting and writing can topple a corrupt world leader. Searching for her own scoops, Cindy doesn’t always get it right, on paper or in real life. But whether she’s writing features about ghost hunters, falling off her bicycle and into her first crush, or navigating shifting friendships, Cindy grows wiser and more confident through every awkward and hilarious mistake.

Our Thoughts on this Review

There is some content focusing on the potential positive elements of this book.

Warnings

We will have to strongly disagree on this one. Even if you don’t share the same disdain for the “graphic memoirs aimed at kids” movement, it is at least critical to point out the negative content parents will absolutely want to know about for their children.

Scripture Reflection

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

— Joshua 1:8-9
