Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content

This book glorifies comic books, which today tend to be very dark and almost entirely inappropriate for a Christian family, especially for children this young. There are a lot of rude comments here, for example, “Commander Barf Face” and “Hooray. And by hooray I mean Barf!”. Most of this revolves around a young lady in his class. They are both very rude to each other, for example when he gets happy to do something that will upset her or when she calls him “Captain Grossface” and sticks his tongue out. Mentions not telling Mom who ate the last of the ice cream. Villain drawings in one or two places may be a bit scary for some sensitive readers. There is a strange moment where the main character asks “who else wears pink bows?” and another classmate responds that his uncle does. There are a few unfortunate references about school: “superheroes don’t need math”, “worse than homework, on a weekend!”. He also mentions not wanting to sit next to another child because he smells like his grandpa. The concerns above are a relatively big deal because in this case it is the main character the story revolves around that is making most of the comments.

Our Thoughts

The Prayerfully Consider verdict here comes because of who the target audience is. There is not a ton of concerning content here, but for who it is written for and for how much there is in such a short number of pages, it is enough to give parents a pause here to determine if this is a book for your family. That is unfortunate because it is a neat story that young kids, especially boys would enjoy. Past the concerns above lies a light and funny book about a kiddo with an active imagination, who wants to be a superhero. This is certainly a title/series to prayerfully consider.

Scripture Reflection

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

— Matthew 5:14-16
