Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content

The only negative thing to say here is that the whole delivery comes across as a bit choppy. These comics were originally a series of very short segments for a Focus on the Family magazine. They have been collected and delivered in a single volume here, but there is no real attempt to weave them into a single story.

Our Thoughts

We have said many times that today “comic books” are much darker than most people realize. A quick trip to a comic book store makes that very clear. This book stands in complete contrast to that. Here we have a full-fledge comic style book that shoots to shine light onto the concept of ‘worldview’, ultimately focusing on the contrast of a secular versus a Christ-centric worldview (for example, pitting Captain Absolutely against Dr. Relative, someone finds himself trapped in philosophy leading to the lie of relativism). We see many verses, great warnings about the dangers of this life, great actions like praying for enemies. Example warnings include immodest clothing, what you listen to matters, distractions and many others. The ultimate point that comes up several times is salvation, which comes across very directly. All this is delivered in a comic book format with great pictures.

Plot SummaryNote: This information is typically from the publisher.

In the graphic novel Captain Absolutely: Defending Truth, Justice, and Lots More Truuuth!, after a computer explosion at the library, Josiah King takes cover in a room full of Bibles. He reads God's Word for the first time that night, and (with the help of mysterious radioactive fumes) is transformed into a superhero---Captain Absolutely. He embarks on a battle for truth and justice, pitted against his ultimate nemesis, the notorious Dr. Relative. Recommended for ages 8 to 12 years.

Scripture Reflection

How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

— Psalm 119:9-11
