Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content

When reading this concerning content, please keep in mind that “graphic novel” formats tend to lead to these books attracting young readers. About half way through the book the major concern category is revealed. What seemed like a nice story about friendship turns out to be an emotionally charged love story between two young girls. We see a light touching of hands. Next comes holding hands and “hearts fluttering”. It turns into a “crush” and then culminates with the young ladies attending a dance as dates (both buy each other a corsage) and eventually slow dancing and kissing. A teacher announces her “pronouns” after her name and the whole class follows suit, with one young lady using “they/them”. Along the way a neat storyline about creating your own magazine is used to reveal an example that says it is about “different LGBTQIA2S identities” and stories of “coming out” including one that says, “I never regretted coming out. It’s not always easy, but it made my life infinitely more full of joy”. So there’s that… Obviously, that is more than enough to make this a clear Avoid for Christians, but below is the rest of the concerning content: Near the start of the book, Anne comments that “maybe I was born under an unlucky star”, explaining why all goes wrong for her. Anne is very defensive and has a huge temper, especially at the start of the book. She explodes on people. She calls an older lady who is rude to her a terrible name and says she hates her (although this does lead to a nice teaching moment). As a small clue to what is coming later, when Anne and her new foster mom go to a store, the store has a rainbow on the sign out front and the worker wears one on her shirt as well. During a sleepover, the plans include scary movies and ghost stories. After being told to go to sleep, the girls ignore this and tell stories. Here young readers see pretty frightening images during the story. The term “sucks”, “oh my God” (flippantly) and kindred spirit are used. A teacher is called “so boring”.

Our Thoughts

This is one of the types of book that keeps Christian parents up at night. It comes in a bright, beautiful format that grabs the attention of young children. It presents itself as “sort of” a remake of a classic book. And if a parent was to skim and pre-read for their child, the story comes across as a nice story with some nice takeaway lessons (sacrifice, friendship, etc.). And only around half way through the book does it finally shift and show what it really is (see the main concern above). This is a great example of why Christians need Christian review sources. This is a clear Avoid for Christian families.

Plot SummaryNote: This information is typically from the publisher.Use with caution

In this modern graphic novel retelling of Anne of Green Gables from graphic novelist Kathleen Gros, foster kid Anne Shirley finally lands in a loving home and befriends a girl who she may have more-than-friends feelings for. Anne Shirley has been in foster care her whole life. So when the Cuthberts take her in, she hopes it’s for good. They seem to be hitting it off, but how will they react to the trouble that Anne can sometimes find herself in . . . like accidentally dyeing her hair green or taking a dangerous dare that leaves her in a cast? Then Anne meets Diana Barry, a girl who lives in her apartment building, the Avon-Lea. The two become fast friends, as Anne finds she can share anything with Diana. As time goes on, though, Anne starts to develop more-than-friends feelings for Diana. A new foster home, a new school, and a first-time crush—it’s a lot all at once. But if anyone can handle life’s twists and turns, it’s the irrepressible Anne Shirley.

Scripture Reflection

The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb. By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward.

— Psalm 19:7-11
