Concerning & Potentially Concerning Content

This yet another example of where the short, colorful, graphic novel format is going to lead to the complete wrong type of reader reading this book. And that is unfortunate, because in these short pages of just this first volume there are things to be very concerned about. This book draws readers in right away with a sweet scene of a family on a road trip. They are connecting and loving each other and we begin to get hopeful about this story… until we see in detailed graphics the car plunge over the edge of a cliff. This prolonged scene finds the car on the edge of certain death. Mom and the daughter (the main character) climb out, but dad’s legs are trapped. They hold his hand and call out to him… until the car falls over and dad dies (again, remember the audience of graphic novels). We move forward in time after this to find the family moving into a creepy old house in the country. This is where the book really goes off the rails and we find out the short graphic novel about a family is actually a horror story. In the middle of the night the family is awakened by a frightening noise and mom is literally kidnapped before her kid’s eyes by a wicked, terrifying creature. The rest of the book holds graphics of multiple horrible beings, including a wicked vampire looking creature and a child being led by what seems to be a strange, seemingly possessed, amulet. The 'Publisher's Summary' mentions "man-eating demons".

Our Thoughts

Christians are called to avoid this type of dark content. We are certainly not supposed to fill our children’s minds with it. This is a horror book. Its short length only allows so much suspenseful terror to be present compared to longer stories, but it more than makes up for it by having so many more pictures than horror books normally do, even worse considering the audience. Even without the horror aspect of it, the intense scenes (such as detailed death of the father and kidnapping of the mother) are too much for the inevitable young audience. It is truly getting harder and harder to find even semi-decent graphic novels for kiddos. The confusion is evidenced by the cover, which touts awards for both a “Children’s Choice Book Award” and at the same time a “ALA Best Book for Young Adults”. For those of us who know what “young adult” really means in books today, that seems unthinkable, but here we are. A sad trend Christian parents really need to monitor closely and pray for our world and our children.

Plot SummaryNote: This information is typically from the publisher.Use with caution

Graphic novel star Kazu Kibuishi creates a world of terrible, man-eating demons, a mechanical rabbit, a giant robot---and two ordinary children on a life-or-death mission. After the tragic death of their father, Emily and Navin move with their mother to the home of her deceased great-grandfather, but the strange house proves to be dangerous. Before long, a sinister creature lures the kids' mom through a door in the basement. Em and Navin, desperate not to lose her, follow her into an underground world inhabited by demons, robots, and talking animals. Eventually, they enlist the help of a small mechanical rabbit named Miskit. Together with Miskit, they face the most terrifying monster of all, and Em finally has the chance to save someone she loves.

Warnings

While we are thankful for all Christ-centered review sources, we obviously strongly disagree with this view of this series. We definitely disagree with the comparison between this and Disney movies ‘violence’. This is a totally different thing altogether.

Our Thoughts on this Review

Does a pretty nice job pointing out at least pointing out the major concern items.

Warnings

We really don’t like the “going to give kids the benefit of the doubt” approach when it comes to putting concerning content in front of them. The impact of the negative content also gets downplayed here.

Scripture Reflection

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.

— Ephesians 5:8-11
